Submissions.
Emmerson Street Press is eager to read the work of the vibrant creative people that we know are out there; writers who are proud to be a part of the centuries old literary tradition; writers who have been looking for a place to have their work welcomed.
We are also eager to hear from academics interested in writing an introduction (up to 1000 words) to a reprint classic. In this area we want to hear from PhD types with a passion for a specific book, author or thinker; we want to help you pass that passion on. In this area, we are also interested in translations.
We are primarily interested in Canadian authors and academics, but would be willing to take on an international writer if the submission is too good to let slip by!
Please send:
1. a cover letter describing your publication experience in the body of the email
2. attach a synopsis of the work
3. attach the complete manuscript in Word format

We want exciting books in the following categories:
Fiction.
While we primarily see ourselves as publishers of literary fiction, we are also extremely open-minded.
We love the work of William Gaddis, James Joyce, David Markson, Thomas Pynchon, Joseph Heller, Stanley Elkin, Harry Mathews, Vladimir Nabokov, Samuel Beckett and others that push boundaries, but we also enjoy the more straight-forward styles of Robertson Davies, W.P. Kinsella, William Spackman, John Updike, A.S. Byatt and others.
We love writers with edge.
We are not opposed to genre fiction, but demand that the work be of high literary merit. We would be happy to read work from the next Samuel Delaney, Theodore Sturgeon or H.P. Lovecraft.
In short, we are after well-written books and favour those that have at least a touch of the avant garde.
Note: We are not terribly interested in short story collections. That being said... if you have a collection that will win us over despite our reservations, feel free to submit.
Non-Fiction.
Here are some of the categories we are interested in:
The Arts. Books about literature, music, television and film. Witty and intelligent criticism.
We love: Hugh Kenner's The Pound Era. Declan Kiberd's Ulysses and Us. Jack Green's Fire the Bastards! Marjorie Perloff's Differentials. Italo Calvino's Why Read the Classics?
...just to name a few.
Politics. Contemporary and historical politics with a special interest in nationalism, globalization and culture. Well researched. Where are the exciting political books of decades past?
Manifestos.
Well argued and well researched pieces. If it's purely a rant piece, we're not interested.
Poetry.
We love poetry but let's be honest, most of what you find in bookstores is pretty mediocre. We also know that there is a lot of great work being written at this very moment and we'd love to take a look.
Instead of trying to describe the type of poetry we are looking for (since we have very broad interests on that front) let's just give a quick list of who we like:
Ted Berrigan. Frank O'Hara. John Ashbery. Ted Hughes. Mary Oliver. George Bowering. Kenneth Rexroth. Lorrine Neidecker. Steve McCaffery. Charles Olson. Ron Silliman. da levy. Kenneth Koch. Ezra Pound. ee cummings. Anne Waldman. Allen Ginsberg. James Merrill. Diane Wakoski. Craig Raine. Anne Carson.
....and so many more!
We look forward to reading you
